Wool Lined Waterproof Dog Rug — 1200D Outer, Natural Fibre Lining | Zeberdee
Wool has been keeping animals warm in wet New Zealand weather for a couple of centuries longer than fleece has — and it still does the job better. The Wool Lined Dog Rug is the no-frills, natural-fibre option in our Zeberdee range.
There's a reason horse rugs were lined in wool long before synthetic fleeces existed: wool breathes, wicks, and stays warm even when slightly damp — three things synthetic linings struggle with. The Zeberdee Wool Lined Dog Rug carries that same logic across to dogs.
The outer is a heavy-duty 1200D waterproof shell — the same premium fabric Zeberdee uses across their horse-cover range. The lining is a wool composite that does two jobs at once: it insulates and breathes, so your dog stays warm without overheating, and doesn't end up clammy if they work up a bit of warmth on a brisk walk. No separate synthetic fill needed — the wool itself is the warmth.
The result is a rug that's substantial in the hand, naturally insulating, and built for the kind of winter where conditions change three times in a single walk. Wet, dry, windy, frosty — wool handles all of it.
Why wool?
A few honest reasons it earns its place in the range:
- Breathable warmth. Wool regulates temperature naturally, warm without baking your dog like some fleece linings can.
- Wicks moisture. If your dog gets a bit damp under the rug, wool moves the moisture away from the skin rather than holding it there.
- Warm even when slightly wet. Unlike most synthetics, wool keeps insulating even if it picks up a bit of moisture.
- Natural fibre. Better for dogs with skin sensitivities, dogs that get hot spots under synthetic linings, and owners who'd rather not put petrochemical fleece against their dog's skin.
- Heritage spec. This is how good horse rugs have been made forever, there's a reason.
The trade-off is honest: wool linings are heavier than synthetic fleece, and slower to dry if they get soaked through. For most Kiwi winters, that's a fair trade for the warmth and breathability you get back.
Choosing your design
Every Wool Lined rug uses the same 1200D waterproof outer and wool composite lining — what changes is the colour and pattern of the shell. Pick your favourite from the colour dropdown. Stock rotates as Zeberdee works through different horse-rug offcuts, so each design is limited — when it's gone, it's gone.
Sizing
Sizes run from 40cm through to 50cm, measured from the top of the shoulders to the base of the tail. Stand your dog square (all four feet down, head in a natural position), measure their back length, then pick the closest size from the dropdown.
How does this compare to the other Zeberdee rugs?
Every rug in our Zeberdee range uses the same tough 1200D waterproof outer. The lining is what changes:
- Wool Lined (this rug) — natural wool composite. Breathable, warm without overheating, no synthetic fill. Sizes 40–50cm
- Super Cozy — soft synthetic fleece. Maximum snuggle factor, best for dogs that genuinely feel the cold. Choose 100g or 200g fill.
- New Season (non-stick) — smooth synthetic lining. Hair-friendly, easy on/off, sleek fit. Choose 100g or 200g fill.
If you want natural fibre, breathable warmth, and a slightly larger size range — this is the one.
FAQs
Why choose wool lining over fleece? Wool does three things synthetic fleece struggles with: it breathes (so your dog doesn't overheat or get clammy), it wicks moisture away from the skin, and it stays warm even when slightly damp. Fleece is softer and snugglier, but wool is the better choice for active dogs, dogs that get hot under synthetic linings, dogs with skin sensitivities, and anyone who prefers natural fibres. It's also the traditional spec used in proper horse rugs for good reason.
Does this rug have a fill weight like the 100g or 200g options? No — and that's a feature, not a missing detail. The wool composite lining provides the warmth itself, so there's no separate synthetic fill layer needed. That means a cleaner construction with fewer materials, and a rug that breathes more freely than fill-based options. The warmth level is roughly equivalent to a light-to-medium fill, which makes it a great all-rounder rug for most Kiwi winters.
What size dogs does this rug fit? Sizes run 40cm through 50cm. 40–50cm suits stocky small to medium breeds (Fpx Terriers, Mini Schnauzers, Frenchies, Spaniels, Beagles, smaller Border Collies, Staffordshire Bull Terriers / Staffies, Cocker Spaniels). Measure your dog from the top of the shoulders to the base of the tail with them standing square, and pick the closest size. If between sizes, size up.

Care & Safety
Wool linings need a slightly gentler hand than synthetic fleece. Sponge off mud and grass when dry — that handles most cleaning. For a proper wash, use a cold gentle cycle with a wool-safe detergent (no regular detergent, no fabric softener — both can damage wool fibres and kill the waterproofing on the outer). Air-dry flat to keep the shape — never tumble dry wool. Check fit regularly on growing dogs. Remove if your dog is overheating, scratching at it, or chewing the trim.
