Winter Coats for Dogs
Filter and sort
Built for proper Kiwi weather. Five coats, five jobs, one range — pick the one your dog actually needs.
A wet, cold dog isn't a hardy dog — it's a dog at risk of shivering itself sick. Small breeds, short-coated breeds, older dogs, puppies and recovering dogs all need help regulating their temperature once the weather turns, and a good coat does in five seconds what towels, blankets and hopeful patting can't. Our Zeberdee range covers the five jobs that actually matter: drying your dog off when they come in soaked, keeping the rain off on warmer wet days, adding a touch of warmth in shoulder seasons, proper winter warmth when it's truly cold, and giving you a choice of lining to match your dog's coat type.
Why a coat actually earns its keep
New Zealand weather is wet, windy, and changeable. A 20-minute walk in horizontal rain can leave even a thick-coated dog chilled to the skin, and summer showers catch out plenty of short-coated breeds too. Short-coated dogs (Frenchies, Staffies, Mini Pins, Jack Russells, Whippets), small breeds (Dachshunds, Toy Poodles, Chihuahuas, Cavaliers), older dogs, and dogs recovering from surgery or illness all benefit from extra protection.
The right coat depends on three questions: how cold is it, how wet is it, and what kind of lining suits your dog's coat? The matrix below walks you through it.
Choose your coat
🛁 1. Wickaway Drying Coat — for after your dog gets wet
The Wickaway is the coat your dog wears after a bath, swim, or rainy walk. The wicking fabric pulls moisture through the material so it evaporates from the outer surface — no soaking-towel, no wet-dog-shake, no wet couch. Currently stocked in 40cm, black with pink trim, sized for large small - medium breeds e.g. French Bulldogs and small Staffords.
Best for: Post-bath drying, post-swim recovery, after rainy walks, travel rug.
☂️ 2. New Season Lightweight Rain Coat — rain protection without the warmth
Same heavy-duty 1200D waterproof shell as our heavier rugs, but stripped back to no fill (0g) or a light 50g fill so your dog doesn't overheat. Built for summer rain, warm coastal weather, active dogs, and thick-coated breeds that just need the wet kept off. Choose your fill and design from the dropdowns.
Best for: Summer rain, milder climates, dogs that overheat under fill, thick-coated breeds.
☁️ 3. New Season Waterproof Rug — sleek weather protection with warmth
Same 1200D waterproof outer, smooth non-stick lining, and a choice of 100g (autumn/spring/mild winter) or 200g (proper winter) fill. The non-stick lining is hair-friendly, easy to slip on and off, and ideal for dogs that hate fleece or have coats that tangle in it. Multiple designs in the dropdown.
Best for: Everyday winter weather protection, short-coated dogs, dogs that overheat under fleece.
🐑 4. Wool Lined Waterproof Rug — natural fibre, breathable warmth
Same 1200D waterproof shell with a wool composite lining that does the warmth job itself — no separate synthetic fill needed. Wool breathes, wicks moisture, and stays warm even when slightly damp. Sizes go up to 65cm, so this option also fits slightly larger dogs than the rest of the range. Multiple designs in the dropdown.
Best for: Natural fibre preference, active dogs that overheat under synthetic linings, slightly larger dogs (up to 65cm), dogs with skin sensitivities.
🐾 5. Super Cozy Fleece-Lined Rug — for cold dogs who need real warmth
Same 1200D waterproof outer with a soft fleece lining and a wicking fleece neck. The snuggly option — built for short-coated breeds, older dogs, and any pup that genuinely feels the cold. Choose 100g for shoulder seasons, 200g for proper winter. Multiple designs in the dropdown.
Best for: Dogs that genuinely feel the cold, short-coated breeds, older or recovering dogs, maximum snuggle factor.

FAQ's
Some do, some don't. Thick-coated breeds in good health (Huntaways, Border Collies, most Labradors) usually self-regulate fine on a normal winter walk. But short-coated breeds, small breeds, older dogs, puppies, and dogs recovering from illness or surgery often need help — especially in Canterbury, Otago, Southland and the Central Plateau where frost and wind are routine. Even thick-coated dogs benefit from a lightweight rain coat in summer downpours. A good rule of thumb: if you'd want a jacket on at the same temperature, your short-coated or small dog probably does too.
A drying coat (like the Wickaway) is worn after your dog gets wet — it pulls moisture out of the coat so they dry warm and fast. A rain coat (like the Lightweight) is worn during wet weather to keep the rain off without adding warmth — for warm or active dogs. A winter rug (like the Super Cozy, New Season or Wool Lined) is worn during cold and wet weather to keep your dog both warm and dry. Most dog owners end up wanting at least two — usually a drying coat plus one warm winter rug.
All three have the same 1200D waterproof outer; the lining changes how the coat feels and behaves.
- Fleece (Super Cozy) — softest, warmest standalone feel. Best for dogs that genuinely feel the cold, short-coated breeds, older or recovering dogs, and anyone wanting maximum snuggle factor.
- Non-stick (New Season / Lightweight) — smooth, hair-friendly, easy on/off. Best for dogs that overheat under fleece, dogs with coats that tangle in fleece, and owners who want a sleek everyday rug.
- Wool composite (Wool Lined) — natural fibre, breathable, wicks moisture, stays warm when slightly damp. Best for active dogs, dogs with skin sensitivities, dogs that overheat under synthetic linings, and slightly larger dogs (sizes go up to 65cm).
- 0g — no insulation. Pure rain protection. Summer rain, warm climates, thick-coated breeds, active dogs.
- 50g — light warmth. Shoulder seasons, cooler summer evenings, milder regions.
- 100g — light to medium warmth. Autumn, spring, mild winter days, dogs that run warm.
- 200g — proper winter warmth. Cold mornings, frost, colder regions, older dogs, short-coated breeds.
- Wool Lined (no fill) — equivalent to roughly a light-to-medium fill in warmth, but breathable and natural.
If in doubt, go heavier — you can leave a warmer rug off on a mild day, but you can't add fill on a cold one.
Stand your dog square (all four feet on the ground, head in a natural position) and measure along the spine from the top of the shoulders to the base of the tail. That measurement matches the size on the product dropdown. If you're between sizes, size up — a slightly roomy coat is fine; a tight one rubs.
