What Is Vet Bed?
And Why Every Dog Needs Some
"It stays dry through the night. It gets softer with every wash. And we're NZ's specialist."
Vet bed — also called dry bed, veterinary bedding, or Vetbed — is the bedding used in veterinary clinics, whelping boxes, and dog show kennels across the UK and Australia for decades. It's now readily available in New Zealand, and once you try it, you'll never go back to a normal dog bed.
What Makes Vet Bed Different?
Standard dog beds absorb moisture — meaning your dog sleeps on a damp surface after rain, swimming, or a bath. Vet bed works differently: the pile wicks moisture through to the backing, keeping the surface your dog lies on genuinely dry.
This matters more than it sounds. A perpetually damp sleeping surface leads to skin irritation, hotspots, and in older dogs, joint and pressure issues. Vet bed eliminates this entirely — your dog's coat stays dry, their skin stays healthy, and they're genuinely more comfortable.
How It Works
Vet bed is a deep-pile polyester fabric with a non-slip backing. The fibres are specifically engineered to create a wicking effect — moisture passes through the pile into the backing below, leaving the surface dry within minutes. This is why it's used in whelping boxes (to keep newborn puppies dry) and veterinary recovery areas (where patients need a clean, dry surface at all times).
Uses for Vet Bed
- Crate bedding — keeps dogs dry after walks or in humid environments
- Car boot liner — non-slip, moisture-wicking, easily laundered
- Whelping box — essential for keeping newborn puppies dry and warm
- Dog show benching — the standard at shows across NZ and Australia
- Recovery bedding — post-surgery or illness, keeps recovering dogs dry and comfortable
- Older dog support — reduces pressure points and keeps arthritic dogs comfortable
- Travel — familiar, portable, easy to pack
Machine wash at 30°C — no fabric softener (it clogs the fibres and reduces wicking). Tumble dry on low or air dry. The pile will flatten slightly when wet and fluff up when dry. The more you wash it, the softer it becomes — vet bed genuinely improves with age.
Which Size Do You Need?
We recommend measuring your dog's crate or sleeping area, then adding 1 - 2cm in each direction so the bed can be folded over at the edges. Vet bed can easily be cut to size with regular scissors without fraying — the pile holds together well after cutting.
Colours & Designs
Our range includes solid colours, fun patterned options, and practical neutral tones. The patterns are dye-injected into the pile — they don't fade or wash out. If you're buying for a whelping box, white or cream makes it easy to spot any concerning discharge. For car use, dark grey or black hides dog hair best.
