Joint Health for Dogs:
5 Signs to Watch
& How to Help

The Thorncombe Team  ·  6 min read  ·  Dog Health · Joint Support

"Caught early, joint issues are manageable. Here's what to look for and what actually helps."

Joint problems are one of the most common health issues in dogs — affecting not just large breeds and seniors, but any dog with a history of high-impact activity, injury, or genetic predisposition. The earlier you act, the better the outcome. Here's what to watch for.

The 5 Signs Your Dog's Joints Need Support

🐾
Slower Rising
Taking longer to get up from lying down, especially first thing in the morning.
🚶
Reduced Range
Shorter walks, less enthusiasm, reluctance to run or jump when they used to.
😣
Licking Joints
Repetitive licking of a specific area — often the elbow, hip, or knee — signals localised discomfort.
🏋️
Posture Changes
Shifting weight off one leg, an altered gait, or a hunched back when walking.
😴
More Sleep
Dogs in discomfort often sleep more. If energy levels have dropped without an obvious cause, check joints.
Always Vet First

If your dog shows signs of joint pain or sudden lameness, a vet assessment should come first. Supplements support joint health — they don't treat disease. A vet can identify the underlying cause and advise on the appropriate combination of treatment and supplementation.

Natural Support Options

Green-Lipped Mussel (GLM)

New Zealand's own superfood. Green-lipped mussel is one of the most researched natural joint supplements available, containing a unique combination of omega-3 fatty acids (including ETA, not found in other marine sources), glucosamine, chondroitin, and antioxidants. Studies show significant reductions in joint pain and stiffness with regular supplementation.

It's available in powder, dried whole mussel, and supplement forms. Dried green-lipped mussel treats count toward supplementation — the bioavailability is good, particularly in freeze-dried form.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

EPA and DHA from fish oil or marine sources reduce systemic inflammation — which is the underlying driver of most joint pain. Fish oil, salmon oil, and products containing high omega-3 fish all contribute. FourFlax products naturally contain flaxseed-derived omega-3 alongside their meat protein.

Glucosamine & Chondroitin

The structural building blocks of cartilage. These are the most commonly supplemented nutrients for joint support, and the evidence base is solid for dogs with osteoarthritis. Available in dedicated supplements or as a component of broader joint health formulas.

Supporting Joints Through Exercise

Joint health isn't just about supplementation. Low-impact exercise — swimming, slow lead walking, and gentle play — maintains mobility and muscle mass around the joint without causing additional wear. High-impact jumping and rough play should be reduced for dogs showing joint issues.

Sleeping surface matters too. A dog with stiff joints sleeping on a hard floor or damp surface will be significantly more uncomfortable. Vet bed provides cushioning without the pressure points of an orthopaedic foam bed — and keeps the surface dry, which matters for dogs with skin sensitivity around inflamed joints.
