Dog Digestive Health:
What Actually Works
"A healthy gut is the foundation of everything else. Here's how to support it."
Loose stools, gas, intermittent vomiting, a coat that doesn't look quite right — these are often signs of a gut that needs support. Dog digestive health is a topic most owners don't think about until something goes wrong. Here's what you can do proactively.
Why Gut Health Matters
Around 70% of a dog's immune system lives in their gut. The microbiome — the community of bacteria in the digestive tract — influences everything from immune function and coat condition to mood and energy levels. A disrupted microbiome shows up in ways that seem unrelated: itchy skin, poor coat, recurring ear infections, and lethargy are all commonly linked to gut imbalance.
Signs Your Dog's Gut Needs Support
- Loose or inconsistent stools — not every time, but often enough to notice
- Excessive gas or bloating after meals
- Vomiting grass — occasional is normal, frequent is a signal
- Poor coat condition despite good nutrition and grooming
- Intermittent loss of appetite
- Itchy skin without an obvious allergen cause
- Changes in energy or mood
Probiotics for Dogs
Probiotics introduce beneficial bacteria to the gut. For dogs recovering from antibiotics, dealing with chronic digestive upset, or simply needing microbiome support, a good probiotic supplement makes a measurable difference.
Look for species-specific strains — Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium animalis, and Enterococcus faecium are the most researched for dogs. Avoid human probiotics as the primary choice — canine-specific formulas are more appropriate.
Always give probiotics during and after a course of antibiotics — but separate by 2+ hours from each antibiotic dose so the probiotic bacteria aren't killed before they can colonise. Continue for at least two weeks after the antibiotic course ends.
Goat Milk: The Gentle Alternative
Goat milk has smaller fat globules than cow's milk, making it significantly easier to digest for most dogs. It's naturally lower in lactose, contains digestive enzymes, and provides a gentle source of protein, calcium, and fatty acids.
For dogs with sensitive stomachs, Scoop Dog Goat Milk Powder is an excellent addition to meals or as a lick mat base. Mix with water to your preferred consistency.
NZ-stocked, easy to mix, gentle on sensitive stomachs. A simple daily addition that makes a real difference.
Prebiotics vs Probiotics: What's the Difference?
Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria. Prebiotics are the fibre that feeds those bacteria. Both matter — and many good supplements combine them. Dietary sources of prebiotic fibre include pumpkin, sweet potato, chicory root, and psyllium husk, all of which are safe for dogs in appropriate amounts.
When to See the Vet
Probiotics and dietary support are appropriate for mild, chronic digestive issues. But persistent vomiting, blood in the stool, sudden severe diarrhoea, significant weight loss, or a dog that's clearly unwell requires a vet visit — not a probiotic. Supplements support a healthy gut; they don't treat disease.
