Benebone vs Nylabone: Which is Right for Your Dog?
The Thorncombe Team · 7 min read · Chewing · Durable Toys · Benebone · Nylabone
“We stock both. We love both. But they’re not the same — and the difference matters depending on your dog.”
If you’ve gone looking for a durable nylon chew toy in New Zealand, you’ve almost certainly come across both Benebone and Nylabone. They look similar. They’re both nylon. They’re both designed for dogs who chew things into oblivion. So what’s the actual difference — and does it matter?
Short answer: yes, it matters. Here’s the honest breakdown from the people who sell both.
The quick comparison
Quick answer
Benebone uses real food ingredients infused throughout the nylon for flavour that lasts the life of the chew, plus ergonomic paw-grip shapes. Nylabone offers a wider size range (Petite to Giant) and more shape variety, often at a lower price point. For food-motivated dogs and most NZ households, Benebone usually wins on engagement; Nylabone is excellent for very small or very large dogs and dental-focused chewing.

Where Benebone wins
1. The flavour goes all the way through
This is Benebone’s biggest differentiator and it’s a genuine one. When they say “real bacon” or “real chicken,” they mean real food-grade ingredients infused throughout the nylon during manufacturing — not a coating sprayed on the outside.
Why does that matter? Because with a surface coating, the flavour disappears after the first few chew sessions. With Benebone, the flavour is still there when the chew is 30% worn down, because there’s more of it inside. Dogs stay interested significantly longer.
2. The ergonomic shapes are genuinely smarter
Every Benebone shape is specifically designed so your dog can hold it with their paws while chewing. The Wishbone curves up at both ends. The Fishbone sits flat. The Maplestick is lightweight to carry. These aren’t accidental — they’re the result of actual design thinking about how dogs interact with chews.
Less frustration for your dog. Longer engagement. Simpler for you.
3. Ideal for flavour-motivated dogs
If your dog is highly food-driven and tends to abandon chews once the novelty wears off, Benebone’s flavour persistence is usually the fix. We hear this constantly from customers: “My dog ignored every chew until we tried the Benebone.”
Where Nylabone wins
1. More size options for more dogs
Nylabone offers a wider range of sizes, from Petite (under 2kg) right through to Giant (over 45kg). If you have a very small or very large dog, Nylabone gives you more precision.
2. The lifecycle range is excellent
Nylabone has a well-developed puppy-to-senior product range. Their Puppy and Souper ranges are well thought through for different life stages, and they’re available at a slightly lower price point — which matters if you’re buying in rotation for multiple dogs.
3. More shape variety for specific chewing styles
Nylabone produces a wider variety of shapes overall — including some with nubs and bristles that provide more of a dental cleaning action. If dental hygiene is the primary goal, some Nylabone designs are specifically engineered for that.
Which should you choose?
Quick answer
Choose Benebone if your dog is food-motivated, gets bored of chews quickly, or you want the best possible flavour engagement from a nylon chew. The Wishbone in bacon or chicken is where most dogs should start. Choose Nylabone if you need a very small or very large size, you’re managing multiple dogs on a budget, or your focus is specifically on dental hygiene through textured chewing.
And honestly? Many of our customers run both in rotation — which is a perfectly good approach. Variety keeps dogs engaged.
✅ Our verdict
For most NZ dogs and most NZ dog owners, Benebone is where we’d start — especially if your dog is food-motivated or has shown little interest in chews before. The flavour delivery is genuinely different, and that difference is usually what wins a picky dog over. But Nylabone is excellent in its own right, and we’re proud to stock both.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Are Benebone and Nylabone safe for puppies?
Both brands make dedicated puppy ranges using softer nylon. Adult chews are too hard for developing puppy teeth — always use the puppy-specific range until around 6 months and a full set of adult teeth.
How long does a Benebone last compared to a Nylabone?
It depends heavily on your dog’s chewing style. For most dogs, both will last weeks to months. Heavy chewers (Staffies, Bulldogs, Rottweilers) work through both faster — go up a size and rotate two or three chews to extend life.
Can I give my dog both Benebone and Nylabone in rotation?
Absolutely — and many of our customers do. A rotation of 2–3 different chews actually increases overall engagement because dogs habituate to a single chew over time. Different shape, different flavour, fresh interest.
Which is better for dental health?
For active dental cleaning, some Nylabone designs with nubs and bristles are specifically engineered for that. For sustained, motivated chewing (which is also good for teeth), Benebone’s flavour engagement keeps dogs working at it longer.
Why is Benebone more expensive than Nylabone in NZ?
The real-ingredient flavour infusion costs more to manufacture than surface coatings. You’re paying for flavour that lasts the life of the chew, not just the first few sessions.
