15 KONG Stuffing Ideas
for NZ Dog Owners
"Freeze it. Hand it over. Enjoy 30 minutes of peace. Here's exactly how."
A KONG is only as good as what you put in it. The rubber does the work — but the filling is the secret. Here are 15 tested combinations, from quick weekday fillings to elaborate frozen creations for a rainy Saturday.
The Basic Method
Plug the small hole at the bottom with a small piece of treat or a dab of peanut butter first — this stops the filling falling straight out. Load from the large opening, pack well, and either serve immediately or freeze for 2+ hours.
Frozen KONGs are significantly more engaging — and most dogs will work for 20–30 minutes on a well-frozen one versus 5–10 minutes on a fresh one.
Quick Weekday Fillings
1. Classic Peanut Butter
Unsweetened, xylitol-free peanut butter packed in and frozen. The most reliable high-value filling going. Works for almost every dog.
2. Wet Food + Kibble
Mix your dog's wet food with a handful of kibble, stuff, and freeze. Uses what you already have. Extends mealtime by 15+ minutes.
3. Plain Yoghurt
Unsweetened Greek yoghurt. High protein, good for gut health, and dogs love the flavour. Freeze for at least 3 hours for best results.
4. Banana Mash
Mashed ripe banana. Naturally sweet, easily digestible, and pairs well with peanut butter for a layered filling.
5. Goat Milk Paste
Mix our Scoop Dog Goat Milk Powder with just enough water to make a thick paste. Freeze and serve. Gentle on sensitive stomachs.
Intermediate Combos
6. Peanut Butter + Banana Layer
Layer peanut butter, sliced banana, more peanut butter. Freeze. A Staffie favourite in our house.
7. Cream Cheese + Chicken
Mix cream cheese (in moderation) with shredded cooked chicken. High-value training treat in a portable format. Great for vet visits.
8. Pumpkin + Yoghurt
Mashed plain pumpkin mixed with yoghurt. Excellent for digestive health. Dogs with upset stomachs often respond well to pumpkin.
9. Sweet Potato Mash
Baked, mashed sweet potato. High in fibre, naturally sweet. Freeze and serve. Pairs well with a tiny bit of peanut butter at the base.
10. Apple + Peanut Butter
Grated apple (no seeds or core) mixed with peanut butter. The slight tartness of apple with peanut butter is a combination most dogs find irresistible.
Elevated Weekend Creations
11. The Three-Layer Freeze
Peanut butter base → frozen yoghurt middle → banana top. Freeze between each layer for clean separation. Visually impressive and extremely effective.
12. Bone Broth Freeze
Fill the KONG with low-sodium bone broth and freeze solid. Hydrating, flavourful, and irresistible to most dogs. Great in summer.
13. Sardine + Cream Cheese
Mashed sardine in spring water (drained) mixed with cream cheese. Sounds alarming, but dogs go absolutely wild for it. High in omega-3.
14. Blueberry Yoghurt
Mashed blueberries stirred into plain yoghurt. Blueberries are high in antioxidants and safe for dogs. Freeze for a beautiful purple result.
15. The Kitchen Sink (leftover night)
Mix whatever safe scraps you have: cooked meat, vegetables (no onion/garlic/grapes), plain rice, a dab of peanut butter. KONG stuffing is excellent for using up safe leftovers that would otherwise go to waste.
Never use: xylitol (in some peanut butters), grapes/raisins, onion, garlic, chocolate, macadamia nuts, or avocado. When in doubt, check before using a new ingredient.
