Sometimes your dog doesn't need a winter coat — they just need the rain off. The Lightweight New Season is the answer: same tough 1200D waterproof shell as our heavier rugs, but stripped back to no fill (pure rain protection) or 50g fill (just a whisper of warmth) so your dog doesn't bake.

Not every weather day calls for a winter rug. Summer rain walks, warm coastal climates, dogs that overheat easily, and thick-coated breeds that just need the wet kept off — they all need a coat that protects against the weather without adding warmth they don't need.

That's exactly what the Lightweight coat does. Same heavy-duty 1200D waterproof outer as our 100g and 200g versions, same smooth non-stick lining that won't pull at your dog's coat — just lighter on the fill so your dog stays comfortable when it's drizzling but mild.

Pick the version that fits your conditions: 0g (no fill) for pure rain protection or 50g for a touch of light warmth on cooler shoulder-season days. Then choose your favourite design from the dropdown.

Choosing your fill weight

0g fill — no insulation, pure rain protection. Best for summer showers, warm wet days, thick-coated breeds that just need the wet kept off, dogs that overheat under any fill, and active dogs working up their own warmth on the walk. Think of it as a proper raincoat rather than a winter rug.

50g fill — light warmth, plus rain protection. Best for shoulder seasons (early autumn, late spring), cooler summer evenings, milder regions (upper North Island, coastal Bay of Plenty), and dogs that need a little warmth but would overheat under heavier fill. The "just right" option for transitional weather.

If you're between weights, think about what your dog usually does on the walk — active dogs that get warm fast usually do better in 0g; slower, sedate, or smaller dogs usually appreciate the 50g.

Choosing your design

Every Lightweight rug uses the same 1200D waterproof outer and non-stick lining — what changes is the colour and pattern. Pick your favourite from the design dropdown. Stock rotates as Zeberdee works through different horse-rug offcuts, so each design is limited — when it's gone, it's gone.

Sizing

Sizes are measured from the top of the shoulders to the base of the tail. Stand your dog square (all four feet down, head in a natural position), measure their back length, then pick the closest size from the dropdown. The range is sized for all sizes of dogs. If you're between sizes, size up.

Which New Season rug is right for my dog?

The whole range shares the same 1200D waterproof outer and non-stick lining — the fill weight is what changes:

  • 0g (this rug) — pure rain protection, no warmth. Summer rain, warm dogs, thick-coated breeds.
  • 50g (this rug) — light warmth + rain. Shoulder seasons, cooler evenings, dogs that need a whisper of insulation.
  • 100g (heavier listing) — proper light-to-medium warmth. Autumn, spring, mild winter days.
  • 200g (heavier listing) — solid winter warmth. Cold mornings, frost, colder regions, older dogs.

If you live somewhere with proper winters and your dog feels the cold, the 100g/200g listing is the one. If you mostly need rain protection or you're in a milder climate, this lightweight version does the job without overheating your dog.

FAQs

When do I actually need a lightweight rug like this instead of the 100g or 200g? Choose this rug if you mostly need rain protection rather than warmth. Good reasons to pick the lightweight version: you live in a milder climate (upper North Island, coastal), your dog has a thick coat already, your dog overheats easily under fill, you want a rug for summer rain walks, or you need something for shoulder seasons (autumn/spring) where it's wet but not cold. If your dog genuinely feels the cold or you're in a frosty region in winter, you want the 100g or 200g version instead.

What's the difference between 0g and 50g fill? 0g is no insulation at all — just the 1200D waterproof shell and non-stick lining. Think of it as a pure raincoat: keeps your dog dry, adds no warmth. Best for warm or active dogs. 50g is a very light layer of fill — enough to take the edge off cooler air but not enough to overheat a dog that's working hard on the walk. Best for shoulder-season weather or smaller dogs that need a touch more warmth than a bare shell provides.

Will a no-fill rug actually keep my dog warm at all? Honestly, no — and that's by design. A 0g rug is built to keep your dog dry, not warm. Some dogs (active breeds, thick-coated dogs, big-bodied dogs) generate plenty of their own heat and just need the wet kept off. If your dog needs help staying warm, this isn't the right rug — go for the 50g, 100g, or 200g instead depending on how cold your conditions are.

Quick Specs

  • Lining: Non-stick smooth lining — hair-friendly, doesn't pull at the coat
  • Fill weight: Choose 0g (no fill — pure rain protection) or 50g (light warmth + rain)
  • Designs: Choose from current designs in the dropdown (limited runs — stock rotates)
  • Sizing: Top of shoulders to base of tail (see size dropdown — small-breed focused)
  • Sustainability: Made from premium horse-rug offcuts — zero-waste production

Care & Safety

Sponge off mud and grass when dry — handles most cleaning. For a full wash, use a cold gentle cycle (no fabric softener — it kills waterproofing) and air-dry. Don't tumble. Check fit regularly on growing dogs. Remove if your dog is overheating, scratching at it, or chewing the trim.
